Our Visual Stories

In Room 16 we are learning to tell a sequenced story using detailed pictures. We have used our oral narrative story for BSLA ‘The Lighthouse Princess” to draw the beginning, middle and end of the story. We have tried to add lots of detail so that our story is clear. We have also learnt how to add a speech bubble to show what someone might say. We worked with a buddy and focused hard to draw our clear pictures. We hope you like our visual stories.

One Shot Movies

On Friday, Whaea Rebecca came in to teach us some movie-making skills. Our task was to create a ‘one-shot movie’. We were only allowed to film once and were not allowed to push stop at all. Our movies were supposed to be 1 minute long.

First, we watched some examples, and then we hopped into groups and went to practice. When we knew what we wanted to do, we were given the iPads and sent off to film. When we were finished, we put it into iMovie and learnt how to edit it. We discovered how to turn down the volume, to add music and sound effects, how to add titles, to snip the video so we could speed up and slow down parts. We also learnt how to add a filter (We quite liked the comic one, as you can tell).

We learnt that we need to hold the camera steady when we are filming, which means keeping to a fast walking pace rather than running. Actors also need to slow down to ensure they don’t get too far ahead of the camera. Finally, we learnt that our focus should be on the person/object at all times. We will try and improve on this next time.

We hope you enjoy our short movies!

Using Wow! Words

Today, we were learning to use Wow! words in sentences.  Wow! words are better words to use instead of boring ones. Like for walk, we could use amble, stalked, stagger, hobbled, strut or creep. Using Wow! words makes our stories cooler and more impressive.

Our task was to write a sentence about a dragon picture. We talked about what makes a good sentence and wrote a criteria that we could check off. We talked about the picture to help with ideas, then we worked with a buddy to write a sentence.

We are pretty proud of our mahi, and are going to try to use Wow! words more often in our writing.

Group 2’s Making 10

In maths, we are learning how to Make 10 so we can add and subtract without using our fingers.

We need to find the numbers that equal 10 then add them together. This is heaps easier and faster than counting on with our fingers because we can count in 10s  then add the last number on.

It was a bit tricky at the start, but once we saw how to do it, we found it pretty easy.

Check out our video of Teina and Amara showing how to do this stragegy.

Ipad Time

Today, Whaea Rebecca came into Room 16 to start our weekly lessons on how to use the iPads effectively to create and share our mahi.

She told us a story of Maui and how his grandmother, the goddess of fire, told him to follow the Manaiakalani star cluster to find a new place for his people to settle.

Our task was to sort some picture cards into the correct order so we could retell the story in our own words. Once we were ready, we were able to film our stories. We were shown the parts of an iPad and how to use the video function then were let loose to film on our own. Some of us found this really easy and finished quickly. Others need a bit more practice so we can feel confident being in front of the camera.

River Art

This term we are learning about awa, in particular what makes a healthy awa habitat and the life cycles of the creatures that live within them.

As part of this, we are going to create an Eric Carle-inspired collage of a river scene.

Our first step was to create coloured, textured pieces of paper that we will cut out to make our scene. We learnt how to use our paint brushes to tab, swirl, and flick to create different effects on our paper.

Keep an eye out for our completed pieces later in the term.

Class of the Week!

This week, Room 16 was awarded ‘Class of the Week’ for how awesome we are in taumata each morning. We make sure we sit still and quiet and are respectful when people are talking. We felt pretty proud of ourselves for receiving this award. Whaea Patsy even noticed and told us how great we were doing.

Our next steps are to learn the words of more waiata so we can confidently sing along and to remember to clap to appreciate other’s achievements.

Anzac Day

This year, ANZAC Day fell in the school holidays. Our kura put the call out to see if any students were able to attend the Kawakawa Parade, and around 20 students came along, in uniform, to represent our school. Room 16 was represented by Tane and Whaea Dana. We walked along the main road, following the ex-servicemen, Fire Brigade, Police and others in the community who wanted to pay their respects to those who have been to war over the years. We stood respectfully as poems were read, speeches made, and the Last Post was played on the bugle. We watched as wreaths were laid and then we placed our own poppies by the cenotaph. Lest we forget.

‘Bring Anything But a School Bag’ Day

On the last day of Term 1 we were challenged to come to school without our school bags, and instead, bring anything else. There were some super creative ideas; pillow case, chilli bin, block bag, hinaki, suitcase, mum’s bag, a clever egg carton bag, a tool box and a big toy truck. It was awesome to see the different ideas and also see what other classes brought too. It was a fun way to end the term.

Easter Hat Parade

On Friday 5th April our kura had our annual Easter Hat Parade.

We spent a week or so constructing our awesome Easter hats. In Room 16, we were shown heaps of ideas and got to choose which one we wanted to make. We used cardboard for the base and decorated with paint, pipe cleaners, googly eyes, glitter, stickers and anything else we could find. We were stoked with how they turned out and were proud to show them off to the rest of the school.

Thank you to our awesome senior helpers from Room 5 who came to help us finish them off. We appreciate you Tegan, Ngaere and Isla Ray!

When the parade started, each class got to walk around the hall to show our hats. It was cool to see all the other creative ideas from other classes. Some of us won prizes for our hats, but everyone got an Easter egg. We also got to win extra eggs in a dance off. It was a super fun day.
